Gloves

Gloves keep your hands warm and protect them from sharp rock and abrasion underground. They also improve your grip.

What to look for

Close-fitting rubber or PU-coated work gloves, marigold washing-up gloves or nitrile-dipped gardening gloves offer good grip and dexterity.
Avoid bulky ski, wool or cotton gloves. They soak up water and tear quickly.
Your hands will get wet regardless; prioritise abrasion protection and grip over waterproofing.

What to get first

None. Just buy some when you notice sore or cold hands.
