Group Shelter

A group shelter (bothy bag) is a bag you pull over a group to create a warm, wind-proof pocket. It reduces heat loss for casualties or anyone waiting around underground, and lowers the risk of hypothermia.

What to look for

Pick a 6–8 person model large enough for a casualty to lie down with two carers beside them.

Weight and pack-size matter, because lighter and smaller means you will actually carry it.

Summit Gear SUPALITE 6-8 bothy bags are probably the best money can buy new. Windows are unnecessary and simply add weight.

Summit Gear non-supalite (regular) 6-8 person bothy bags are probably the *cheapest* money can buy new.

What to get first

All your personal caving gear.

You should already carry a personal first-aid kit and have basic hypothermia-management training.

There is always one of these shelters in a Caving Crew leader bag.

Buying Guide

  • Price (New): ££
  • Price (Used): ££
  • Buy online? Yes, but check packed size and internal floor area. Some bags are too small for a casualty lying down.

Buying Second Hand

Buying used is fine provided you can inspect the shelter first. Make sure it is large enough for a casualty lying down, check overall bulk and weight.

Where you can buy it

SummitGear.co.uk plus most outdoor retailers and second-hand marketplaces.
