Hand Jammer (Hand Ascender)

A hand jammer is the ascender you hold to steady yourself whilst you stand up. It works like the chest jammer, sliding up freely and locking when you pull down, but you operate it with your hand instead of your chest.

What to look for

Our recommendation is the Petzl Ascension, a handled hand ascender. It is available in left and right hand versions. Pick the one that matches your dominant hand.

Some people prefer the Petzl Basic, which is an ascender without a handle. There is nothing wrong with these and some cavers prefer them. The Basic is lighter and cheaper, but you have to grip the rope directly above the device rather than using a handle.

Watch out for off-brand ones from unknown sellers. Stick to reputable brands from established retailers.

What to get first

You need a sit harness, chest harness, and chest jammer first. The hand jammer works with your footloop to give you the upward movement on each step.

Buying Guide

  • Buy online? Yes. Hand ascenders are standardised equipment and buying online is fine. Just buy from a reputable retailer and make sure you get the genuine product.

Buying Second Hand

Most of the usual secondhand caveats apply. Hand ascenders have moving parts and a cam that wears over time. If you really know what you are doing, you can check them. But that is not to say secondhand ones are unsafe, just that you need to know what to look for. If you do not, buy new.
