Wellies

Wellies (rubber boots) are the standard footwear for UK caving. They're cheap, durable and perfectly suited to wet, muddy passages.

What to look for

Almost any wellington boot will work: tall or short, designer or budget, neoprene-lined or plain rubber. Focus on comfort and fit. Avoid boots that are already cracking or perished.

What to get first

This is usually the first piece of caving kit you buy. No prior equipment required.

  • Buy online? Yes, if you are confident of sizing. Treat them like any other footwear purchase.

Buying Second Hand

Buying used is fine and often very cheap. Inspect soles for wear and ensure the rubber isn’t cracked; sometimes new boots cost nearly the same as used festival wellies.

Where you can buy it

Outdoor retailers, farm-supply stores, festival clearances and caving shops.
