The hut

The hut has toilets, showers, power, bunks, cooking facilities, fresh drinking water. It may not have signal at all on some networks. It may have WiFi. There aren’t big shops nearby. We will have to bring everything with us.

What are the plans? What if the weathers bad?

Caving is rarely affected by bad weather. We'll figure out all plans the night before in the hut.

What should I bring?

Key:
normal text: things you definitely need
italic: optional things you might like to have

Sleeping things

  • Sleeping bag (mummy style sleeping bags with a hood are best in the UK)
  • Pillow
  • Slippers?
  • Earplugs and eyemask (other people can be loud, can snore and this may help you sleep better)

Caving Gear

If you have your own personal caving gear, bring that. If there's specific rope lengths you want or other kit, mention it in the group chat beforehand.

I don't have any kit

If you don’t already have them, we'll be lending

  • Caving Oversuit to go over your undersuit
  • Caving Undersuit to go underneath your oversuit
  • Caving Helmet with Caving Headtorch and fully charged Batteries
  • Wellies

Clothes

The weather and time of year is important to think about, but this is the British Isles, we have to plan for all weathers at all times of year.

  • a set of clothes for caving each day.
    • Leggings
    • Thermal base layers
    • Outdoorsy t-shirts (or long sleeved)
    • Thick socks or Neoprene socks
    • Wellies (we do have spares if necessary, but the sizes and stock are limited). These aren’t special wellies – £12 wellies from go-outdoors or sparkling pink wellies with fur linings are great for caving.
  • A spare a full change of clothes back at camp (for being around the hut)
  • Any important medicines you take
  • Contact lenses or string for your glasses.
  • Some full sealed snacks you enjoy eating (eg a mars bar)
  • phone charger and cable
  • book / cards / headphones
  • buff / scarf
  • swimming costume(!)
  • suncream
  • sunglasses
  • themos flask
  • first aid kit with plasters, hay fever medication, painkillers
  • hat

Washing

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • toiletries
  • all medication you need
  • towel

Food

Almost all meals are included in the trip price, and will be tailored to your dietary requirements - specifically:

  • Large Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday
  • Evening meal on Saturday

We already have your dietary requirements from the signup form, and everyone will be catered for. If the chefs on this trip have any questions or queries, they'll be in touch directly.

Where am I driving to?

You are headed precisely to here, but read on for a second.

Shepton Mallet Caving Club

Parking

There is plenty of car parking space within the cottage compound, but park efficiently and be prepared to be blocked in.

If you're first to arrive

If you are the first one there, or likely to be - please message The Crew directly for info of how to get inside.

Where to sleep

We may be sharing the hut with other users, and we don't segregate on perceived differences, put your sleeping bag in a bunk to reserve that as your place to sleep.

Questions

Got any questions? Suggestions? Not sure if something you have is suitable? Ask in the group chat and we’ll reply super quickly - always happy to clarify things.
