Bagshawe Extra-Welcoming Giggletrip

Tuesday, 9 June 2026

On Tuesday 9th June, some people went to Bagshawe Cavern in Derbyshire to explore the Bagshawe Giggletrip route.

Tim D writes:

“It was often a bit too macho man and elitist for my liking, so I stopped going.”

Tim F went down his first cave in 1982. Sixteen years old. He spent years caving through the 80s and 90s with a few different clubs, liked the caves, didn’t always like the company. So he stopped. Not a dramatic exit. Just a quiet drift. You don’t renew your membership one year, nobody asks why, a decade slips past, then three, and caving becomes something you used to do.

Until a Tuesday evening in June, when he dug out his old undersuit and helmet (both, in his words, “belong on the Antiques Roadshow”) and signed up for a Bagshawe Giggletrip.

Most of the group needed everything borrowed, from oversuit to wellies. That’s how Giggletrips work. You turn up, we sort you out with everything you need, and you go underground with people who want you to have a good time. No gear required, no experience expected, no test to pass.

Nicky led. Natasha seconded. That morning, Nicky’s message to the group chat: “Oh my goodness! This day has snuck up on me!!! The day is here already!” Not exactly ice-cool leadership energy. Exactly the energy you’d want.

Between them they ran the kind of evening that makes you wonder why anyone ever did it differently. Welcoming, fun, with harder options for anyone who fancied a push and zero pressure for anyone who didn’t. The sort of trip where the leaders care about the people as much as the cave.

Rowan had built so much buffer into his drive that he was sitting in the car park before anyone else, wondering if he’d found the right field. He had. “Gave myself a bit too much time,” he admitted. Better early than lost. By the end of the night he was done in. “Pretty knackered. I loved every minute.”

“Nicky and Natasha were fantastic at making it interesting, fun, and adding in some more difficult bits if we wanted to do them.” That was Des. He’d already signed up for the following week before the photos had finished uploading. The option to test yourself or not, without anyone making a thing of it either way, came up in everyone’s feedback. Sounds like a small detail. It isn’t.

“Good clean fun,” was how Richard summed it up. He’d brought his own wellies and not much else (we sorted the rest), called Nicky and Natasha “completely awesome,” and was asking about progression routes and buying his own kit before the mud had dried.

And Tim F? The bloke who walked away from caving three decades ago because the culture didn’t sit right?

“What stood out for me tonight is how great Nicky and Natasha were at making it fun and inclusive. I’ve been bowled over by the organisation and positive ethos of the Caving Crew. I loved every minute of this trip.”

He’s signing up for more.

Forty-four years between his first cave and this one. Same rock, same mud, same darkness. Completely different experience.

What the Trip Is Like

Wowfactor

Estimated Duration: 3.75 hours

Note: This is a vague estimate and probably isn't a good reflection of how long the team were actually underground on this occasion.

This is the classic beginner's GiggleTrip. It's varied, interesting and a good intro to caving, and to Caving Crew style caving. Ideal for people new to caving, returning to caving or new to the Crew and keen to get a sense of what Caving with the Crew is like.
It's both relatively easy, but not free of challenge of interest.
