Skills Description

The main distinction between advanced and intermediate is how quickly and confidently you can do the rigging and problem solving, and the exposure and seriousness of the terrain this will be used in.

It’s likely that the pitches are long, tight, complex, loud, wet and far far away from nice places.

These caves often lead to the caver being much more isolated while on rope, so a greater degree of independence and self-rescue skills are needed.

  • Self Rescue given due consideration to remoteness
    • Contact Rescues
      • Go to someone stuck on rope, and get you both down without a spare rope
    • Cut and lower with a spare rope and descender
      • Eg from the top or rebelay – to lower casualty to the ground on spare rope
  • Rigging in complex, tight, and imperfect rigging scenarios
  • Knowledge of where to learn more
    • Eg Alpine Caving
    • Good people to ask for advice on modern gear and modern advice
  • Be confident with long pitches and heights and exposure and narrow and awkward pitches
