Skills Description

  • Knots
    • Some method of joining rope securely with loop to enable smooth passage and cowstail security connection
      • Eg Double Fishermans, Reverse Rethreaded Figure-of-eight (flemish bend), etc
  • Rope self-rescue skills
    • Breaking into a rope system to haul
      • Various options exist
    • Descent rescue through rebelay/deviation down
  • Ability to talk someone (whether you can see them or not) through to
    • Changeovers
    • Abseiling at Pitchheads
    • Prussiking 
    • Rebelays
    • Deviations
    • Knot Passes
    • Knowledge of common problems
  • Rigging a rebelay
    • How much loop to leave
    • Consideration of minimising potential shockloads
  • Rigging a deviation
    • Awareness of increasing difficulty from higher angles and forces from high angles.
  • Rigging a knot pass
    • And how to avoid needing one.
  • Problem solving common rebelay and deviation skills
    • Awareness of common problems at rebelays and deviations
      • Clipping a deviation
      • Unable to unload cowstails or jammers at rebelay
      • Getting jammers stuck tight underneath a knot
      • Confusing deviations and rebelays
      • Awareness that being above the problem is almost always the best place to solve a problem from
  • Pull through
    • Using a safe knot they already know
